The return of the International AIDS Conference to the U.S. in July 2012 represents a significant victory for public health and human rights. The selection of Washington, DC as the site for the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) is the result of years of dedicated advocacy to end the nation’s misguided entry restrictions on people living with HIV — restrictions that were based on fear, rather than science. The biennial International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policymakers, people living with HIV, and others committed to ending the epidemic. It will be a tremendous opportunity for researchers from around the world to share the latest scientific advances in the field, learn from one another’s expertise, and develop strategies for advancing all facets of our collective efforts to treat and prevent HIV. Two main goals for AmeriCorps Week 2012 are to: Help make AmeriCorps members and alums feel part of something larger than themselves and their projects and connect AmeriCorps members and alums with each other and a nationwide effort; and Communicate the powerful impact AmeriCorps has on critical national and community challenges and on the lives of members and alums. This year’s theme — AmeriCorps Works –communicates the value and effectiveness of AmeriCorps while providing flexibility to be used in many different contexts. It provides an overarching framework to communicate AmeriCorps triple bottom line return on investment — for the recipients of service, the people who serve, and the larger community and nation. For more information on DCPCA’s Community HealthCorps involvement in AmeriCorps Week 2012, contact Eric Vicks, DCPCA Senior Community Relations Manager, at (202) 638-0252, extension 221.
