Carl Vogel Center

Overview

Carl Vogel Center is a nonprofit community-based organization that provides multidisciplinary and integrated medical health care that embodies all aspects of a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. CVC serves residents of the DC metropolitan area, with a special attention to the medically underserved individuals to assist them in becoming full partners and informed advocates in managing their health. CVC focuses much of its efforts on the medically underserved individuals, especially those with HIV or AIDS.

Health Services

Primary Medical Care provides comprehensive primary health care, appropriate medical evaluation and clinical care, with appropriate referrals to other health services such as oral health;

Get Healthy DC! includes screening for diabetes, hypertension, HIV, and other chronic diseases, counseling and educational workshops to improve the quality of health and life for DC residents;

Case Management Services provide a range of client-centered services that link clients with health care, psychosocial, and other services. Ensures timely and coordinated access to medically appropriate levels of health and support services and continuity of care, through ongoing assessment of the client’s needs and personal support systems;

Mental Health Services provide psychological and psychiatric treatment counseling to individuals with a diagnosed mental illness, conducted in a group or individual setting, and provided by a licensed mental health professional;

Nutritional Counseling for both individuals and groups that includes assessments, meal planning, state-of-the-art diagnostic testing using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, and culturally appropriate nutritional education presented by a registered, licensed dietitian;

Rehabilitation Services – Complementary Therapy Program provides acupuncture and Swedish massage by licensed practitioners in accordance with an individualized plan of care intended to improve or maintain a client’s quality of life and optimal capacity for self care;

Treatment Education and Adherence Program for both individuals and groups that provides education, clinical assessments, and counseling presented by a Registered Nurse regarding today’s complex treatment regimens and sometimes arduous requirements of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART);

Early Intervention Services includes HIV counseling, testing, and referral, along with counseling and education on living with the disease;

Substance Abuse and Prevention Counseling for drug and alcohol related problems;

Food Bank provides free food and personal care products to low-income clients and their families on a bi-monthly basis. The food bank distributes over 25,000 pounds a food a year; and

Mobile Unit allows the CVC to provide education and screening for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in neighborhoods.

Current Initiatives

Carl Vogel Center is currently working on the installation of an electronic health records system, thus allowing CVC providers the ability to enhance service delivery to patients.

Major Achievements

Hiring a full-time physician; an increase in the number of patients; and a “new” partnership with Family Health International – TLC-Plus: A Study to Evaluate the feasibility of an Enhanced Test, Links to Care Plus Treat Approach for HIV prevention.

Working Toward Health Equity

With the hiring of a full-time physician, CVC is now able to provide more comprehensive medical treatment for those who seek services. In addition, CVC has partnered with the Capital City Area Health Education Center, Inc. to increase access to health care in medically underserved areas by improving the supply, distribution, diversity, and quality of the health care workforce in the District.

CC AHEC assigns both medical students and nurse practitioner students to complete clinical rotations at CVC. CC AHEC academic partners are: (1) Catholic University of America – School of Nursing; (2) Georgetown University – Department of Family Medicine and School of Nursing & Health Sciences; (3) The George Washington University – School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and the School of Public Health & Health Sciences; (4) Howard University – School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and Nursing & Allied Health; and (5) Trinity University – Nursing Program.
