Mary’s Center

Overview

Mary’s Center provides primary health care and other wrap-around services to any individual that enters their doors regardless of their ability to pay.  They take most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and provide a sliding fee-scale to self-paid individuals to guarantee that their health care needs are met.  Their community is composed of citizens born in the U.S., as well as immigrants from more than 40 different countries living throughout the DC metropolitan area.

Mission

Mary’s Center’s mission is to build better futures through the delivery of health care, education, and social services.  They embrace culturally diverse communities to provide them with the highest quality of care, regardless of their ability to pay.

They envision a day when everyone will receive the highest quality of health care, education, and social services.  By working together, they help members of all communities be their own advocates and produce generations of leaders ready to contribute to their community’s growth and well-being.

Health Services

Mary’s Center focuses on well-baby and well-child care, immunizations, adult care, prenatal care, gynecology, cancer prevention, smoking cessation, diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart diseases, asthma, HIV, STDs, family planning, mental health, and dental care.

Current Initiatives

• Mary’s Center opened a state-of-the art new health center in Ward 4 on March 1, 2011, and hosted a grand opening on May 18, 2011. With 26,000 square feet, the new space has 22 medical examination rooms and four dental rooms, as well as a demonstration kitchen and rooms to expand their fit and wellness programs.

• The medical building of their headquarters at 2333 Ontario Road NW will be remodeled by June 2011 with funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Capital Improvement Program.  This project will expand their medical capacity.

• They will expand services to Prince Georges County, Maryland, by Spring 2011. Mary’s Center will provide maternal and child health care in partnership with The Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Center (“Judy Center”) and the Prince George’s Child Resource Center.

• Mary’s Center is increasing the number of therapists and family support workers in the mental health program to support their new behavioral health consultant model, which involves total integration of the mental health provider within the primary care treatment plan.

Major Achievements

Organizational Growth:

During the last 22 years, Mary’s Center has grown from being based in a basement serving 200 women per year to a multi-cultural, multi-service, and multi-site federally qualified health center with more than 17,000 participants and dozens of community partners.

Their array of services has broadened significantly since its inception. They grew from providing only prenatal and pediatric care to comprehensive health, social, and educational services to all family members. Their success in improving lives and strengthening communities — one family at a time — has fostered important partnerships and earned them many awards.  They work closely with a network of service providers around the metro region. They also collaborate with academic researchers to examine and implement effective practices that address the needs of the communities being served.

Strengthening Relationship with the White House:

Mary’s Center was the first community health center to officially be visited by First Lady Michelle Obama in February 2009.

In May 2010, Maria Gomez was an invited guest to a State Dinner at the White House in honor of the Constitutional Citizen President of the United Mexican States, Felipe Calderón, and his wife.

First Lady Michelle Obama was also the honorary chair of their annual gala Noche Tropical in October 2010.

Mary’s Center’s President/CEO Maria Gomez is frequently invited to attend meetings at the White House to discuss issues affecting the health of the residents in the DC metro area.

Increased Recognition:

Maria Gomez was one of 19 local activists added to a national exhibition and received an “Upstander Award.”  The traveling show — “Choosing to Participate” — is about the struggle for justice and citizen participation and examines activism by individuals and groups that demonstrate an act of courage or some measure of compassion.  The Historical Society of Washington will host this show through Friday, June 17, 2011.

In October 2010, Washingtonian magazine recognized Mary’s Center as a critical piece of the region’s health care system and its president and CEO, Maria Gomez, as one of the 45 Who Shaped Washington (1965 – 2010).

Maria Gomez was named co-chair of the Health and Human Services Committee of DC Mayor-elect Vincent C. Gray’s Transition Team in November 2010.
