Standing Up. Speaking Out.
CAN I GET A WITNESS?!
So I am standing on the brink of a very significant birthday, and by the time you read this I will have slid down the slippery slope right into the heart of it.  As I contemplate the far too rapid passing of years, I try hard to look on the positive side of what otherwise is defined by wrinkles, gray hair, myopia, and the onset of mild arthritis.  When I approached 50 (ah, there’s a clue!), I took comfort in the thought that I had been around long enough to be able to claim wisdom, a sure knowledge of some basic core beliefs, and strong opinions.  To sum it up, I finally felt like I knew what I was doing.

Sculpture Come To Life
Raymond B. Kemp is a priest of Washington, DC and a Senior Fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.

It was still pretty early Wednesday morn, January 3rd, when I exited the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church after a lively prayer service for Inauguration Day in DC.  New beginnings spawn an oft-ignored virtue – hope – and the day was singing hope, as well.  The voices of Ellington under the masterful Samuel Bonds, the voices of pols and preachers, young and old, chorused a score whose page was turning briskly.  Lots of chairs at the top were already filled, the messages were of things happening, and wanting to happen, the notes were on pitch and key.  Together, all together:  WE CAN DO THIS!
