By Veneta Masson, RN, MA Mom-and-Pop Stores: A Model for Health Care
It’s been thirty years since I got involved in the start-up of a small, nonprofit, faith-based primary care clinic in Washington’s Shaw neighborhood. A lot has changed since then. There’s a new convention center looming over the townhouse on 9th Street where we set up shop. Many of those we cared for in our office or their homes are gone now. So is the clinic. After 25 years and a move to Northeast DC, it finally succumbed to financial pressures but was quickly resurrected under a new name as part of the Unity Health Care Network. Some of the staff has remained and so have many long-time patients who still refer to it as they always have, “the clinic.” |
